Education Partnership North East’s commitment to providing a culture of inclusiveness across all campuses has been recognised by the LGBTQ North East Awards.
Youth worker Stephen Day, has been shortlisted for the ‘Creating Safer Learning Spaces’ award for his tireless work to encourage equality, diversity and acceptance across all of our campuses, ensuring our students and staff feel safe.
The LGBTQ Awards, which were created by Sunderland-based charitable project Rainbow Foundation and supported by Northumbrian Water, honours the positive contributions made by individuals, organisations and groups across the region to improve the lives of members of the LGBTQ community.
Stephen, who also received the award on behalf of Sunderland College in 2017, said: “I am honoured to be nominated again for the LGBTQ North East Awards.
“The work we do is challenging, rewarding, complex and enjoyable and it is a great pleasure to see our students’ individual growth and to know I have had some impact. Our belief is that everyone performs at their best when they are able to be themselves. By creating a safe, inclusive environment you help reinforce that every student is valued, has a voice and is celebrated for who they are.
“I would have liked to have been involved in something like this myself when I was a student struggling to accept my sexuality, so I can see the value of having this support within the college experience.”
Due to the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic, the winners will be announced at a ceremony hosted by Sage Gateshead in 2020, with a date to be confirmed soon.
