A programme to help reduce isolation among older people in Northumberland has been launched with the help of Northumberland College.

IT tutors from Northumberland College are teaching 'The Elderberries' how to get the most from the Internet and mobile devices.

The six week course, which is taught at The Alnwick Garden, covers basics such as security, online shopping and keeping in touch with loved ones using social networks.

Denise Dunn, Head of Creative and Lifestyle at the college said: "Northumberland College are proud to be support the Elderberries programme. The course is flexible to meet the needs and current skills of the group and aims to engage individuals who would otherwise be unable to access education and the Internet.

"The course covers a range of useful everyday topics that could be used to help make life easier and more enjoyable."

25 iPads were kindly donated to the Elderberries programme by Fenwick in Newcastle to aid the learning.
