We are so excited to welcome you back!

Thank you for your continued support over the last few months. We have been very humbled by all your kind emails, offers of donations and offers of support. We really do appreciate it.

We are very pleased to be able to reopen the zoo but with restrictions that need to be in place to keep our visitors safe, in line with government guidance.

Your visit to Northumberland College Zoo may feel a little different to what you have experienced in the past. On site you will notice we have lots of construction going on in the main college campus. A new SEND centre is currently being built next to the learning centre, the vet centre is being refurbished and the student accommodation is being developed all ready for September.

Parking for the zoo is in the bottom car park only. This year, the woodland areas, garden areas and main campus grounds are no longer part of the offer. The tickets you purchase will give you access to the zoo grounds only.

Packaged snack, crisps, hot drinks, canned and bottled cold drinks, ice cream and gifts will be available from the kiosk in the picnic area within the zoo grounds.

Due to current government restrictions keeper talks and encounters cannot go ahead so instead we have a series of videos to engage and connect to some of our species that you can watch on your smart phone or tablet. Watch out for QR codes around the centre. The zoo also now has some one way paths to ensure social distancing is maintained.

You must have a pre-booked ticket – please click here to book your tickets. We are selling tickets in blocks of 20 minutes from 10am and from 1pm. Ticket numbers are restricted to ensure we can comfortably comply safely with social distancing around the zoo.

If you are an annual pass holder or have a Metro Radio family voucher, please select this option at checkout.

Please do not come to the zoo if you are suffering from any symptoms of COVID-19.

How we'll keep you safe

  • We have carried out a detailed risk assessment to ensure we are COVID secure.
  • We have limited numbers of tickets sold each day. We are selling tickets in advance to make sure we can restrict numbers within the zoo to allow social distancing. We will review our ticket numbers and release more tickets when we feel it’s safe to do so and post updates on our social media and website.
  • Tickets will be sold in blocks to stagger the times when people arrive and queuing systems will be in place while we process your tickets and go through our safety measures.
  • Tickets must be bought online before you arrive. Feel free to check the day you are wanting to comto see if you can purchase those. Simply show us the tickets on a smart phone. No need to print off. We cannot sell tickets at the kiosk – this will also be reviewed in the coming weeks and months.
  • The Zoo kiosk will be open from 10.30 -3.30 daily. Selling cold drinks, hot drinks, packaged snacks and a range of gifts. These are all on display but cannot be touched, we are happy to show you the items before you purchase.
  • We are only accepting card payments within the zoo so please have your card to hand if you are wishing to pay for anything.
  • Plastic screens have been fitted at the admissions kiosk and at the zoo kiosk for staff and guest safety.
  • Picnic areas have been spaced out to provide 1m plus spacing around tables. Please sit within your household/social bubbles please. The picnic areas and seating is regularly cleaned throughout the day.
  • Play areas are not open.

  • Around the zoo we have created one way systems – this is to allow safe social distancing and to ensure you get to see everything at the zoo. For areas where one way system is not possible, please walk to the left to allow safe passing. Floor stickers and directional signage is now displayed  around the zoo along with a map you will be given when you enter the zoo to follow. Internal areas including the aquatics centre and the 'Walk of Life' indoor area are both one way. Please follow the signage to ensure social distancing can be maintained.
  • The wallaby walkthrough will be open daily from 11am-12noon and from 2pm-3pm only.
  • Additional hand sanitiser stations have been provided. Please use these to regularly sanitise your hands throughout your visit.
  • Toilets are open and will be regularly cleaned throughout the day, please make sure you wash your hands after using the facilities.
  • Reminders to not touch glass windows and stand off barriers are provided to reduce cross contamination.
  • First aiders are still available but have been updated with COVID-19 measures to ensure staff and guest safety.
  • Keeper talks and animal handling sessions will not be available for the time being due to government restrictions.
  • Our staff will be wearing additional PPE including gloves, face shields and masks. This is to keep them safe while working around the zoo.
  • We appreciate that the Northumberland weather can be changeable. While we do have indoor areas we cannot have more than what is socially distance allowed in these areas if the rain comes. Please bring an umbrella so that you don’t get caught out.
