What’s it all about?

This qualification provides students with an in-depth understanding of the knowledge and skills needed when working directly with children and young people in school environments.

It covers all aspects of specialist support including planning, delivering and reviewing assessment strategies to support learning alongside the teacher, bilingual and special needs support and personal development and reflective practice.

It is aimed at students working in roles that offer specialist support for pupils’ learning in primary, secondary or special schools.

You will need high levels of motivation, excellent communication skills and hold a prior level 2 childcare qualification which includes assessment of supporting children and young people in an appropriate setting. Enhanced DBS clearance and a placement in a school setting is required.

All units will be internally assessed through a portfolio of evidence developed using a range of methods including practical assessments, observations, written assignments or tasks.

English and maths are important life skills that will help you to achieve your best in your studies and progress to your chosen career. Ideally you will have grade C/4 in maths and English on entry.

Students need to show competence in both skills and knowledge, therefore need to be working or be on a practical placement (min. 1 day per week) during the duration of the taught programme of study.

Thursday evening, 5pm - 8pm

This part-time course is ideal for adults who want to supporting teaching and learning with children and young people in school settings. A vocational qualification that incorporates knowledge and practical skills, employment or a placement in the sector is essential.

The qualification is full and relevant and confirms competence in an occupational role to the standards required.

You will study a range of knowledge and skills units including:
