What’s it all about?

This course is for students who are interested in developing the specific technical and professional skills and knowledge that will lead to meaningful employment in the Horticulture industry.

The course is acomprehensive introduction to a professional career in horticulture. The practical elements cover about 40% of the course and the theoretical elements about 60%.

Examples of subjects taught are plant identification, lawn care, plant health, garden machinery, plant and soil science. The depth of this knowledge will allow students to access employment in the sector or to progress onto a degree course as this qualification is fully equivalent to A-Levels for students aged 16-18.

The course is available for school leavers (aged 16-18) and adults (aged 19+) to enrol on.

You will need 4 GCSEs at grade 4-9 including Maths, English and Science. Or a relevant Level 2 qualification.

Your progress will be assessed through successfully achieve the following assessments: Multiple choice Health and Safety test, an externally set, externally moderated assignment, a synoptic examination, one portfolio of evidence, optional unit assessments.

English and Maths are important life skills that will help you to achieve your best in your studies and progress to your dream career. If you have not already achieved grade 9-4 in GCSE Maths and/ or English at school, we will support you to improve your skills.

This is a full-time course with sessions over three days for one year. You will also have the opportunity to create a portfolio of 150 hours of work experience as part of your study programme.

This study programme offers a comprehensive introduction to a professional career in horticulture. Students will have the opportunities to study a wide range of horticultural topics including Garden Design, plant identification, lawn care.

The modules you will study include:

- Identification
- Selection and use of ornamental plants
- Maintaining turf in parks and gardens
- Plant and soil science
- Land-based machinery operations
- Principles of plant health and protection

What’s next?

After successfully completing this course, you could progress to further studies, such as a Foundation Degree in Horticulture, followed by a top up BSc Hons Degree in Horticulture.
