Vegetation varies from a white hill on the 'Slyme' to large
areas of heather moorland up on the Northern area of the farm known
as 'the hope'. Much of the farm consists of upland acidic grassland
which merge into bog habitats in the valley bottoms. Since there is
no in-bye land at Carlcroft that can be used for the production of
winter feed, hay is made down at Kirkley Hall and transported up in
the summer months.
