Vacancy Title: Apprentice Chef

An amazing opportunity has arisen within a very reputable and well-established restaurant based in Ponteland, while working towards becoming a qualified chef. Catch Seafood is a modern day fish and seafood restaurant built on family values. The restaurant is passionate about seafood and takes pride in sourcing only the freshest and highest quality fish from UK ports.

Working Week - 30 hours per week (minimum)

Weekly Wage: £150.00 (£5.00 per hr)

Expected apprenticeship duration: 12-18 months

Vacancy Description 

Commis Chef will carry out the following tasks:

  • Looking after the area allocated to him or her while working within a busy team
  • Learning and training in food preparation tasks (mincing, garnishes, etc)
  • Hot and cold cooking tasks using various equipment (simple cooking, seasoning, etc)
  • Cleaning and tidying the area allocated to him or her in line with COSHH regulations
  • The Commis Chef may be required to stand in for his or her superior (Section Chef or Head Chef) when confident and the latter is absent on leave


Key Responsibilities


  • To ensure that health and safety rules are applied and respected (especially HACCP)
  • To look after his or her own area and learn basic then advanced requirements of the role
  • To ensure the cleanliness and tidiness of working areas (floors, equipment, tables, etc)

  • Hands on with practical tasks using various equipment and utensils

Qualifications required


  • GCSE grades A*- C desirable (functional skills will be a requirement of the apprenticeship)

Things to consider/Reality Check


You will be required to work a minimum of 30 hours and up to 40 hours per week, depending on the shift patterns. This may include working late evenings, Apprenticeship National Minimum Wage (ANMW): The National Minimum Wage for Apprentices is £3.50 per hour from 1st October 2016. This is the legal minimum pay per hour applying to 16-18 year old apprentices and those aged 19 and over in the first year of their apprenticeship. For apprentices 19 or over who have completed their first year and are continuing their apprenticeship, the National Minimum wage appropriate to their age applies. Candidates 25years+ may qualify for Universal Credit based on low income and full time hours worked per week.
