Welcome to the Land and Environment Academy.
Based at our Kirkley Hall Campus the Academy offers all levels of training in Agriculture, Arboriculture, Landscaping and Horticulture as well as Countryside Management, Game Management and Floristry.
We utilize the full college estate, its fields, farm, woodlands and wetlands , river habitats and exceptional formal and natural gardens so that we can offer you unique opportunities and real life, work experiences and skills that will help you gain employment and stay with you for all of your working life.
We ensure that all our students learn to manage the environment around them, growing and tending plants and animals and learning how to manage the economics of their chosen careers. They will gain skills that will get them a job at the end of their course or allow them to continue on to higher levels of training. They will work with the latest equipment and technology along with learning practical skills some of which are traditional and will have not changed for centuries. The teaching team here at the Academy are highly motivated and skilled tutors who know all their students and help each one to develop and achieve beyond their goals.
The Academy has two farms including an 850 acre hill farm and 300 acres of lowland land with over 1500 sheep and 60 cattle, pigs and poultry. It has extensive gardens with landscaping areas and national recognised plant collections, large glasshouses and cut flower beds. Recently built and equipped workshops with tractor driving areas and estate workshops and ensure that students learn the skills required when operating and maintaining large expensive agricultural and forestry machinery. Dedicated floristry classroom cold-store and new for next year, a retail outlet. The range of facilities are matched by the technical equipment and tools that are available to our students including tree climbing equipment Chainsaws, Chippers and Tractors. Our extensive estate has a range of habitats and species including Otters, Badgers, Red Squirrels and a host of woodland and wetland bird species and through our many contacts, access to some of the best countryside in Britain.
