Who is the course for?

The Level 1 course is for people with an interest in outdoor activities, but who have limited experience. This programme aims to provide you with an introduction to develop personal skills, knowledge and experience in activities such as rock climbing, canoe and kayak, hillwalking, mountaineering, mountain biking and high-ropes

Do I need any formal qualifications?

No formal qualifications are required however an interest in Outdoor activities is essential along with a can do attitude

What will I study on the course?

Our courses offer a pathway into the outdoor adventure industry and focus on training students up to become qualified rock climbing instructors, kayak and canoe coaches, hill-walking and mountaineering leaders, expedition leaders, high-ropes and zip wire instructors, etc.

The Units covered by the qualification are;

Unit 01 Outdoor industry awareness

This unit provides an introduction for learners to the UK outdoor industry. Learners will investigate the structure and organisation of the industry as well as job roles and responsibilities.

Unit 02 Develop a personal effectiveness profile and action plan

In this unit learners will assess their own current abilities and reflect on their own performance in respect of communication, team working and leadership skills. This will lead to the development of an action plan, identifying areas of potential personal development.

Unit 03 Assist in the delivery of an outdoor activity session

This unit covers planning, preparation, leading and concluding an activity session at an outdoor centre.

Unit 04 Job and training search skills

The course is run over 2 to 3 days per week, and is run as part of a full time - one year programme (September June). The level 1 course runs from Sept Nov and leads onto the Level 2 Qualification

At least one full day a week is dedicated to outdoor adventurous activities.

Assessment is on-going throughout the period with observation of practical skills and marking of written assignments, projects and tests. Assessed evidence is organised into a candidate portfolio, which is submitted at the end of the course.

As this is a short course programme there are no further qualification undertaken

NCFE Level 1 Personal Development in Outdoor Industry

The course offers an excellent foundation and springboard for those wishing to progress onto our Foundation year programme. For those that complete and are ready for the challenge of a level 2 programme they continue on to the Gateway level 2 Diploma course.

Many of our learners study for free with a Fee Waiver when they are in receipt of qualifying benefits or studying a first full Level 2 or Level 3 qualification and meet age restrictions or are aged between 16-18.

If you are not entitled to a Fee Waiver, you may be entitled to receive Learner Support Funds to help with paying your course fees, or if you are aged over 19 and planning to study at Level 3 or 4 and have not previously studied at Level 3 or above you will be able to apply for an Advanced Learner Loan that covers the costs of your tuition fees. The loan will not cover the cost of any examination / registration fees and these will need to be paid for separately, or you may be entitled to receive Learner Support Funds to help cover the cost.

All learners may also apply for help with the cost of travel to college and the college may be able to help with the costs of childcare, travel, books, equipment and meals.
