Who is the course for?

HND Photography is a very active and practical course which has been designed to help you develop the skills you need to start a career in photography or a related area in the Creative Industries. The programme offers a strong emphasis on vocational and practical skills, alongside the development of your own personal conceptual and creative identity as a photographer. Through the course you will also build an individual portfolio of work to start your professional photographic career or apply to university.

Do I need any formal qualifications?

Students will have normally completed one of the following:

* Foundation Diploma in Art and Design.

* BTEC Diploma in Art and Design Level 3.

* Access to HE in Art and Design or Media.

* 2 A Levels at grade C or above or equivalent.

We are happy to consider those who possess a high level of experience in art and design but may not possess formal qualifications. Those returning to education with life skills and experience in the workplace would also be considered.

What will I study on the course?

The course covers all aspects of photography including traditional darkroom photography, digital photography and Photoshop, modules on location shooting, fashion photography, studio photography, contextual studies and professional practice. Teaching is tutorial-based by highly experienced practitioners, through seminars, lectures, workshops, guest speakers, critiques and gallery visits.

The course runs for 2 days per week over 2 Years.

Assessment is through coursework on a series of projects, culminating in a final project/show where you will produce work in a subject area of your choice. Assessments are by portfolio presentations of practical projects, written work and group presentations.

You may also have the opportunity to complement your studies with other qualifications that will help you gain employment, including Functional Skills in English, Mathematics and IT

The HND programme aims to prepare you for a career in photography or to enable progression to undergraduate study resulting in a BA Honours Degree.

After successful completion of the course there is a range of technical and creative job opportunities in the wider lens based media industries, including commercial photography, fine art photography, photojournalism, video operator, photography technician, studio assistant and teaching.

Higher Education learners are entitled to apply for HE Loans that cover the cost of tuition. In addition, depending on your chosen course of study and individual circumstances, you may be entitled to a maintenance loan. You may also qualify for a college bursary All learners can also apply for help with the cost of travel to college and the college may be able to help with the costs of childcare, travel, books, equipment and meals for learners resident in houses where income is below £25000 annually.
