Who is the course for?

This is a FREE short course (18 weeks) suitable for any adults (19+ years) who would like to work with children and young people. The qualification will give learners a basic understanding of childcare and education and will help you to make an informed choice about progression. After successful completion of the course you can progress to either the early years or schools / colleges sector at either level 2 or directly to level 3 (depending on previous experience and qualifications)

Do I need any formal qualifications?

No formal qualifications required. Learners do not need to be working or undertaking practical placements to complete this qualification as it is knowledge only.

What will I study on the course?

The purpose of the course is to prepare you for further learning or training and/or develop knowledge and/or skills in childcare and education. You will study a range of units such as safeguarding, child development, the value of play and sharing learning experiences with children.

Note: Does not confer competence or licence to practice

You will attend college for two hours per week (Wednesday 12.30pm - 2.30pm) and also complete work at home.

All units will be internally assessed using a range of methods which could include: written assignments or tasks such as designing a leaflet or booklet, charts or diagrams or practical class sessions.

Many of our learners study for free with a Fee Waiver when they are in receipt of qualifying benefits or studying a first full Level 2 or Level 3 qualification and meet age restrictions or are aged between 16-18.

If you are not entitled to a Fee Waiver, you may be entitled to receive Learner Support Funds to help with paying your course fees, or if you are aged over 19 and planning to study at Level 3 or 4 and have not previously studied at Level 3 or above you will be able to apply for an Advanced Learner Loan that covers the costs of your tuition fees. The loan will not cover the cost of any examination / registration fees and these will need to be paid for separately, or you may be entitled to receive Learner Support Funds to help cover the cost.

All learners may also apply for help with the cost of travel to college and the college may be able to help with the costs of childcare, travel, books, equipment and meals.
