Who is the course for?

This course is for anyone employed in the construction industry who would like to develop his or her skills and knowledge to become a qualified bricklayer. Experienced bricklayers can complete a fast track Advanced Apprenticeship framework in order to gain fully qualified status. This will be dependent on existing skills and knowledge

Do I need any formal qualifications?

You should have a relevant Level 2 Qualification and be employed in the industry.

You should also have two GCSEs at grade D in English and maths or a relevant Level 1 qualification and have an interest in bricklaying. Following a successful interview and initial assessment, you will be allocated a place to study the practical and theoretical elements of bricklaying. Parents and carers are welcome to attend the interview but not the initial assessment

What will I study on the course?

You will study building methods and construction technology, carrying out structural and decorative brickwork and learn how to repair and maintain masonry structures. Ideal if you are employed as a bricklayer and wish to progress from Level 2. You will also study and display Carrying out Health and Safety in the workplace, Material Science, Advanced Craft Skills, Environmental Issues, Managerial Studies and Architectural Design. These will all be delivered and carried out in Practical and theoretical tests throughout the programme of study.

As well as improving your practical abilities, you will develop your skills in maths and English, which will support your main programme of study, enhance your life skills and help with your future career progression.

You will attend college one day per week for one year, you will spend the remaining time working for your employer. You will develop a flexible learning plan that meets the needs of you and your employer. You will develop the skills and knowledge to become a competent bricklayer through a series of comprehensive practical training and workshop activities. You can start your Apprenticeship at any time in the year.

Your progress will be assessed by practical and knowledge based assignments, additional work based assessments will be carried out by our assessment team. You will also complete a Health and safety assessment and your maths and English skills will be assessed through a controlled assessment or final exam.

During the course you will have the opportunity to study level 2 Functional Skills, you will be tested at the start of your course to identify your needs.

Functional Skills level 2.

After successfully completing the course, you could progress onto a level 4 higher education course to further enhance your supervisory and management skills.

Many of our learners study for free with a Fee Waiver when they are in receipt of qualifying benefits or studying a first full Level 2 or Level 3 qualification and meet age restrictions or are aged between 16-18.

If you are not entitled to a Fee Waiver, you may be entitled to receive Learner Support Funds to help with paying your course fees, or if you are aged over 19 and planning to study at Level 3 or 4 and have not previously studied at Level 3 or above you will be able to apply for an Advanced Learner Loan that covers the costs of your tuition fees. The loan will not cover the cost of any examination / registration fees and these will need to be paid for separately, or you may be entitled to receive Learner Support Funds to help cover the cost.

All learners may also apply for help with the cost of travel to college and the college may be able to help with the costs of childcare, travel, books, equipment and meals.
