Who is the course for?

The award is aimed at any pre-service or in-service applicant who needs an initial award for their role as a teacher, trainer or tutor within an FE college or Adult and Community Learning Centre, training providers and those delivering work based training such as within voluntary, community, private and public organisations. All candidates must undertake an interview and apply for DBS clearance to demonstrate that they do not have a criminal background which might prevent them from working as a teacher with young people or vulnerable adults.

Do I need any formal qualifications?

Candidates must be able to read and communicate clearly and accurately enough to meet the requirements of this Level 3 training and hold a relevant vocational and/or academic Qualification of at least the level above that of their learners, ideally at a minimum of Level 3 their chosen subject specialism although those with substantial, appropriate vocational experience may also be considered.

What will I study on the course?

Modules on the course will enable candidates to develop an understanding of roles and responsibilities in relation to teaching and to appreciate appropriate teaching and learning approaches within a specialist subject area. Candidates will also be required to plan, deliver and evaluate a micro-teaching session and to observe and evaluate others micro-teaching sessions as well as developing their awareness and understanding of the use of assessment methods and record keeping.

The course runs for one evening per week over 12 weeks.

Candidates will complete a portfolio of written assessment and will also be involved in one hour of micro-teaching in order to successfully achieve the award. Within this hour they must deliver a minimum of 15 minutes of micro-teaching within the college class, which will be observed and assessed by your tutor. You will also observe and evaluate the micro-teaching sessions of other candidates for a further 45 minutes.

You may also have the opportunity to complement your studies with other Qualifications that will help you gain employment, including English and Maths.

After completing the course you could study a Certificate in Education (Lifelong Learning) or Certificate in Assessing Vocational Achievement.

Higher Education learners are entitled to apply for HE Loans that cover the cost of tuition. In addition, depending on your chosen course of study and individual circumstances, you may be entitled to a maintenance loan. You may also qualify for a college bursary All learners can also apply for help with the cost of travel to college and the college may be able to help with the costs of childcare, travel, books, equipment and meals for learners resident in houses where income is below £25000 annually.
