Who is the course for?

This Level 4 Certificate in Education and Training is designed for anyone currently delivering teaching or training (in-service) or undertaking a voluntary placement (pre-service), wishing to develop their role as a teacher, trainer or tutor within a further education college, community learning centre, training provider or work-based training.

Do I need any formal qualifications?

You should hold qualifications at Level 3 or above alongside work experience in the vocational area you intend to teach. You should be in employment delivering teaching or training (in-service) or undertaking a voluntary placement at a recognised training or educational establishment (pre-service), subject to DBS clearance and organised prior to the course start.

You will be required to identify a work-based mentor who can support you in your subject specialism. The Certificate is designed to follow directly on from the Level 3 Award in Education and training (www.northumberland.ac.uk) and runs for one evening per week over eighteen weeks starting in January. If you have not yet achieved the Award, please contact our Teacher Education team who will be able to discuss options and opportunities with you including fast track and blended learning.

What will I study on the course?

Within this certificate you will learn about:

- Planning and delivery of schemes of work and sessions

- Negotiating individual learning goals

- A range of teaching and learning strategies

- Effective classroom communication

- Assessment practices and procedures.

You will be required to demonstrate occupational competence in vocational education by applying the knowledge, understanding and skills you are developing on the course.

One evening per week over 18 weeks.

You will complete a combination of written assessment tasks and assignments which will form your portfolio evidencing your personal and professional practice. You will also need to be observed in your teaching practice by your tutor and your specialist mentor in order to successfully achieve the Certificate.

ASCENTIS Certificate in Education and Training (QCF) Level 4

Following completion of this Level 4 Certificate in Education and Training, you can apply for a Level 5 Diploma in Education Training. Alternatively, you may be eligible to apply to complete a bridging programme enabling you to consolidate and extend your achievements on a Level 5 University of Huddersfield's Certificate in Education.

Many of our learners study for free with a Fee Waiver when they are in receipt of qualifying benefits or studying a first full Level 2 or Level 3 qualification and meet age restrictions or are aged between 16-18.

If you are not entitled to a Fee Waiver, you may be entitled to receive Learner Support Funds to help with paying your course fees, or if you are aged over 19 and planning to study at Level 3 or 4 and have not previously studied at Level 3 or above you will be able to apply for an Advanced Learner Loan that covers the costs of your tuition fees. The loan will not cover the cost of any examination / registration fees and these will need to be paid for separately, or you may be entitled to receive Learner Support Funds to help cover the cost.

All learners may also apply for help with the cost of travel to college and the college may be able to help with the costs of childcare, travel, books, equipment and meals.
