Who is the course for?

This course is for anyone who is interested in sport, fitness or coaching. This course is designed to equip individuals with the knowledge, understanding and practical skills required for success in current and future employment in sport and related industries. It is equivalent to three A levels, which can enable you to progress onto University after successful completion of the course.

Do I need any formal qualifications?

You will need to have four GCSEs at grade C or above (Maths and English desired to be C or above) or equivalent level 2 qualifications related to sport.

What will I study on the course?

You will study 6 core units: Anatomy for sport and exercise, sport and exercise physiology, sport and exercise psychology, research methods, research project and fitness testing. You will also study 12 additional units which will range from sports injuries to nutrition.

The course runs for 3 days per week over 2 years.

Your progress will be assessed by a range of methods including identification test, practical assessments/observations, and written assignments. An overall grade for each unit will be awarded and then a final grade for the award at the end of the academic year (pass, merit or distinction).

You may also have the opportunity to complement your studies with other qualifications that will help you gain employment, including caching awards, first aid and functional skills.

EDEXCEL BTEC Extended Diploma in Sport and Exercise Sciences (QCF) Level 3

After completing the course you could progress to University to study sport science related courses such as physiotherapy, sports psychology, coaching, sports development or teaching. Or you could go straight into related sports employment such as the health and fitness industry.

Many of our learners study for free with a Fee Waiver when they are in receipt of qualifying benefits or studying a first full Level 2 or Level 3 qualification and meet age restrictions or are aged between 16-18.

If you are not entitled to a Fee Waiver, you may be entitled to receive Learner Support Funds to help with paying your course fees, or if you are aged over 19 and planning to study at Level 3 or 4 and have not previously studied at Level 3 or above you will be able to apply for an Advanced Learner Loan that covers the costs of your tuition fees. The loan will not cover the cost of any examination / registration fees and these will need to be paid for separately, or you may be entitled to receive Learner Support Funds to help cover the cost.

All learners may also apply for help with the cost of travel to college and the college may be able to help with the costs of childcare, travel, books, equipment and meals.
