Who is the course for?

This course is suitable for those who wish to progress to university to study a science related degree such as forensic science, laboratory management, biology, biomedical sciences, chemistry of pharmaceutical analysis. You should be aged 19+ years, highly organised, able to problem solve and use initiative with effective analytical and investigative skills.

Do I need any formal qualifications?

You should have GCSE English Language, GCSE Mathematics and GCSE Science at Grade C or above. You will be required to undertake an initial assessment in English and Maths, and demonstrate Level 2 ability.

Please note if you do not have these qualifications, we can discuss and support the identification of an appropriate pathway to suit your needs and chosen University course entrance requirements.

What will I study on the course?

You will study a range of subjects at Level 3 including biology, chemistry, statistical and mathematical methods, psychology and forensic science as well as core skills units such as examination techniques and practical scientific projects.

Course Cost: £3800 fees for 18/19

Additional costs:

Students are advised they may incur extra costs for additional books, journal subscriptions and resources. If the printing allocation is exceeded then you may need to purchase additional credits. Students are responsible for transport costs and this includes field trips.

Your progress will be assessed by controlled assessments, assignments, practical projects and exams.

Access to Higher Education Diploma: Science

After successful completion of this course you should progress to a higher education programme of study either biology, biomedical sciences, chemistry, and pharmaceutical analysis. You may alternatively choose to progress within Northumberland College for example to our HNC in Applied Biology.

Upon successful completion of your degree you could apply for a wide range of science industry roles dependent on your chosen specialism working in both the public sector for example the NHS, police services or fire services or the private sector working in industries such as biomedical laboratories, pharmaceutical production or development, biotechnology, nanotechnology or forensic laboratory.

Many of our learners study for free with a Fee Waiver when they are in receipt of qualifying benefits or studying a first full Level 2 or Level 3 qualification and meet age restrictions or are aged between 16-18.

If you are not entitled to a Fee Waiver, you may be entitled to receive Learner Support Funds to help with paying your course fees, or if you are aged over 19 and planning to study at Level 3 or 4 and have not previously studied at Level 3 or above you will be able to apply for an Advanced Learner Loan that covers the costs of your tuition fees. The loan will not cover the cost of any examination / registration fees and these will need to be paid for separately, or you may be entitled to receive Learner Support Funds to help cover the cost.

All learners may also apply for help with the cost of travel to college and the college may be able to help with the costs of childcare, travel, books, equipment and meals.
