Who is the course for?

If you are interested in learning all aspects of the floristry Industry, including practical floral designs as well as art and design and identifying flowers, then this course is for you. Northumberland College is the perfect place to study practical floristry. We have good facilities and the benefit of using materials from our extensive grounds. We also have the advantage of working with Kirkley Hall for weddings and events

Do I need any formal qualifications?

You are required to have a good standard of general education and competence.

Assessment of suitability is likely to be based on GCSE grades or equivalent.

Mature students with relevant experience will also be considered

What will I study on the course?

This course includes both practical floristry and industry training. The units covered include Art and Design for florists which is practical in looking at colour and other design elements, Identification, care and monitoring of fresh materials - you will learn botanical classification and know how to treat cut flowers to get the longest life, practical hand tied designs and floral arrangements.

We cover seasonal designs and make lots of beautiful arrangements for Christmas, Valentine's day and Mother's day. You may also take part in events and weddings held in our beautiful Kirkley Hall.

The course is run 1 full day per week over 1 academic year. Each lesson will consist of theory, group work, lots of discussion, as well as practical floristry.

Your progress will be assessed by a range of methods including practical assessments, observations, written assignments, and identification tests. Assessments are spread out and varied to allow your skills to develop. You will also sit an online multiple choice exam on the Art and design unit.

You may also have the opportunity to complement your studies with other qualifications to help you gain employment, including functional skills, employability and personal social development. Other options may be available depending on timetabled commitments.

NPTC Certificate in Floristry (QCF) Level 2

After completing the course you could go on to do a second year of study to achieve Level 2 Diploma in Floristry (conversion)

Many of our learners study for free with a Fee Waiver when they are in receipt of qualifying benefits or studying a first full Level 2 or Level 3 qualification and meet age restrictions or are aged between 16-18.

If you are not entitled to a Fee Waiver, you may be entitled to receive Learner Support Funds to help with paying your course fees, or if you are aged over 19 and planning to study at Level 3 or 4 and have not previously studied at Level 3 or above you will be able to apply for an Advanced Learner Loan that covers the costs of your tuition fees. The loan will not cover the cost of any examination / registration fees and these will need to be paid for separately, or you may be entitled to receive Learner Support Funds to help cover the cost.

All learners may also apply for help with the cost of travel to college and the college may be able to help with the costs of childcare, travel, books, equipment and meals.
