Who is the course for?

This course is for individuals who work or want to work within the equine industry. The level 3 Advanced Technical Diploma (540) is a qualification aimed at providing you with a range of practical skills and knowledge aimed at preparing you for employment or progression into further training within the equine industry.

Do I need any formal qualifications?

The recommended entry requirements are a minimum of five GCSEs at grade C or which will include Maths and English, or equivalent GNVQ/BTEC qualifications. Entry can also be gained through achieving a relevant National Certificate, this could be the Level 2 Diploma in Horse Care or the L2 Technical Certificate in Equine Care, however other land-based qualifications would be considered on individual merit. Mature students would be considered on previous practical experience within an equine environment.

What will I study on the course?

To gain this qualification you will need to successfully complete a theory exam, Health and safety assignment, Biology exam, synoptic assessment, work experience and an optional unit which can be selected from a choice of units. The qualification includes a choices of topics which are both practical and theoretical.

- Stable yard operations

- Equine Health

- Horse tack and equipment

- Biological systems of the horse

- Prepare horse for presentation

- Equine Feeding and Nutrition

- Horse Behaviour and Welfare

Optional units include

- Exercising horses

- Competition grooming

- Working horses from the groun

- Event management


The work experience module will provide you with first-hand experience of working in a competition yard, racing school, riding school or other related equine business. To prepare you for work experience you will undertake practical duties on the college yard at Kirkley, this will be organised on a rota basis. Work experience when possible will be organised around you future career choices, or if still undecided will offer an opportunity to sample a variety of working environments which should help with your progression into employment or further equine training.

The course runs full-time over one year. The L3 Advanced Technical Diploma (540) in Equine Management is part of a larger suite of Equine Management qualifications, and is broadly equivalent to one and a half A Levels. This qualification has been developed in conjunction with industry, and to ensure it equips the learner with the right work skills it is delivered both practically and theoretically. It includes visits to industry and education trips with employability as a strong focus.

Progress is assessed by a range of methods which include practical assessments, observations, written assignments and tests:1 progress reviews ensure that students remain motivated and continue to work to their full potential.

Throughout this course of study there is also the opportunity to gain other qualifications which will help you gain employment or prepare you for further training and qualifications. These opportunities include studying for BHS exams including Stages 1, 2, 3, Riding and Road Safety, Stage 2 Teach. There is also the opportunity to take UKCC (Coaching Certificates) and complimentary qualifications such as occupational studies and first aid

Training for any extra qualification is provided however there may be costs attached for many additional qualifications in the form of membership fees and exam entry fees.

The Advanced Technical (540) has been developed to equip learners to go directly into employment or progress to further training.

You might progress into work such as:

- Assistant Manager (competition yards)

- Assistant Manager (Riding School)

- Competition Groom

- Equine Trainee Nutritionist

- Trainee Stud Manager

Academic progression into training could be a Level Advanced Technical Extended Diploma in Equine Management Level 3 (equivalent of three A Levels).

Alternatively you could progress to an Advanced Apprenticeship in Horse Care and Management which allows you to combine working in industry and attending college one day per week.

The 540 Diploma also gives you entry into Higher education and a range of programmes such as an Equine Studies Foundation Degree, a BSc (Hons) in Equine Studies or a BSc (Hons) in Sports Psychology.

This qualification carries 24-84 UCAS Points (depending on the grade achieved).

Many of our learners study for free with a Fee Waiver when they are in receipt of qualifying benefits or studying a first full Level 2 or Level 3 qualification and meet age restrictions or are aged between 16-18.

If you are not entitled to a Fee Waiver, you may be entitled to receive Learner Support Funds to help with paying your course fees, or if you are aged over 19 and planning to study at Level 3 or 4 and have not previously studied at Level 3 or above you will be able to apply for an Advanced Learner Loan that covers the costs of your tuition fees. The loan will not cover the cost of any examination / registration fees and these will need to be paid for separately, or you may be entitled to receive Learner Support Funds to help cover the cost.

All learners may also apply for help with the cost of travel to college and the college may be able to help with the costs of childcare, travel, books, equipment and meals.
