Who is the course for?

If you are passionate about animals and would like an introduction to the career opportunities available within the animal care industry, you have come to the right place. Northumberland college offers the opportunity to get up close and personal to a range of species and teaches you how to care for them to a high standard.

Do I need any formal qualifications?

For access onto the course you will be required to have attained a standard of general education and competence, sufficient enough to benefit from and succeed on the course. Assessment of suitability is likely to be based on GCSE grades or equivalent. Recommended two GCSE grades (grade D or above) ideally including English or Science. If you do not possess qualifications for direct entry to a Level 3 Diploma, this course acts as a natural bridge. Mature students with relevant experience will also be considered.

What will I study on the course?

You will study exciting units including animal husbandry, animal health and welfare, zoo animals, wildlife, animal training and work experience along with other modules and additional side qualifications. Kirkley Hall Zoological Gardens offers the opportunity to gain experience with a wide variety of animals including all five taxa groups such as birds, fish, amphibians, reptiles and mammals.

The course runs for three to four days per week over one academic year and is classed as full time education. Some of these days will account for industrial experience hours which will include working on the animal unit as a member of the zoological team and assisting in the day to day practice.

Your progress will be assessed periodically through assignments, verbal and practical assessments, and various types of written tests. Assessments are spread out and varied to allow all of your skills to be utilised.

You may also have the opportunity to complement your studies with other qualifications to help you gain employment, including functional skills, employability and personal social development. Other options may be available depending on timetabled commitments.
