Who is the course for?

The course is for students who have achieved average grades in their GCSEs particularly in Science, Maths and English and who have a dedicated interest in the care and welfare of animals.

Over the two years the course is equivalent to two A Levels and is ideal for those wishing to gain employment within the Animal Management sector or entry into Higher Education at Kirkley Hall or higher education providers.

Do I need any formal qualifications?

The recommended entry requirements are: Level 2 Diploma in Animal Care or 4 GCSEs grade 4/5 or above to include English and/or Maths and Science.

What will I study on the course?

You will cover a variety of exciting units including:

- Animal Health and Husbandry

- Animal Behaviour and Communication

- Animal Welfare and Breed Development

- Animal Feeding and Nutrition

- Biological systems of Animals

- Health and Safety

- Work experience

You will be expected to complete half/one day every week of engaging industrial experience at the expanding College zoo, this can be included within the total of 150 hours of actual work experience each year needed for the course, some of which can be carried out on an external placement.

The course runs for 4 days per week over 1 year. However you will be expected to study and complete assignment work or carry out a work placement on your none college day. The second year of the course leads to a L3 Advanced Technical Diploma in Animal Managment

Your progress will be assessed by a range of stimulating methods including written assignments, practical assessments / observations and a written exam

You may also have the opportunity to complement your studies with other qualifications that will help you gain employment, including additionality e.g. employability skills. If you have not gained your Grade 4 Maths or English GCSE you will have the opportunity to re-sit

After completing the course you could study a Foundation Degree at Kirkley Hall or progress on to University to study BSc (Hons) in Zoology/Animal Behaviour/Conservation/Animal Science/ Animal Management for example.

This qualification carries 16 to 56 UCAS points (depending on the grade achieved).

Or alternatively find employment in animal management/welfare organisations or in research:

- Assistant Zoo Keeper

- Assistant Kennel/Cattery Worker

- Dog Groomer/Assistant Dog Groomer

- Animal Care Technician

- Animal Nutritionist

- Vet Care Assistant

Many of our learners study for free with a Fee Waiver when they are in receipt of qualifying benefits or studying a first full Level 2 or Level 3 qualification and meet age restrictions or are aged between 16-18.

If you are not entitled to a Fee Waiver, you may be entitled to receive Learner Support Funds to help with paying your course fees, or if you are aged over 19 and planning to study at Level 3 or 4 and have not previously studied at Level 3 or above you will be able to apply for an Advanced Learner Loan that covers the costs of your tuition fees. The loan will not cover the cost of any examination / registration fees and these will need to be paid for separately, or you may be entitled to receive Learner Support Funds to help cover the cost.

All learners may also apply for help with the cost of travel to college and the college may be able to help with the costs of childcare, travel, books, equipment and meals.
