Who is the course for?

This course is for students interested in computing and who have the ability to study at college two evenings a week. The programme offers you the chance to study up-to-date computing subjects at your local College, to a Higher National Certificate and Higher National Diploma standard.

The HNC and HND in Computing are specialist, work-related programmes of study that cover the key knowledge, understanding and practical skills required by the computing sector.

The courses off the academic and technical training that will give you the skills necessary to design, implement and support IT systems in a vast range of industries. You will develop a range of contemporary vocational skills relating to the use and support of IT systems.

Do I need any formal qualifications?

For the HNC you will need either one A Level at grade C or above, a BTEC National Diploma or an Advanced Level GNVQ.

For the HND you will be required to have achieved a minimum of 120 UCAS tariff points from a full Level 3 qualification in a relevant subject and at least four GCSEs at grades A* - C, including Maths and English or Level 2 equivalent.

What will I study on the course?

The courses comprise a mixture of theory and practice across a varied range of interesting units and have been designed to give you the broadcast experience and exposure to subjects including:

- System analysis and design

- Database design concepts

- Networking Technology

- Business Skills for e-commerce

- Website Design

- Routing Concepts (CCNA2)

- Designing a small office network (CCNA1)

- Network Security

- Java Programming

- Project design, implementation and evaluation

- Object oriented programming

- Information systems in organisations

- Quality systems in IT

- Data analysis and design

- Web applications development

- Programming in .Net (C )

The Higher National Certificate course requires attendance two evenings per week for two years. In addition, you will be expected to work independently in your own time. Each year is split into two semesters. The Higher National Diploma requires one additional year of study generally for two evenings per week where a further six units are completed.

Additional costs:

Students are advised they may incur extra costs for additional books, journal subscriptions and resources. If the printing allocation is exceeded then you may need to purchase additional credits. Students are responsible for transport costs and this includes field trips.

Your progress will be assessed by a combination of methods including assignments and group projects for each module.

Although the course has a heavy workload, you could study additional subjects such as CISCO, Microsoft, A+.

After completing the three years of the course, there are a range of computer related degrees at universities or you could find employment in a computing company.

Higher Education learners are entitled to apply for HE Loans that cover the cost of tuition. In addition, depending on your chosen course of study and individual circumstances, you may be entitled to a maintenance loan. You may also qualify for a college bursary All learners can also apply for help with the cost of travel to college and the college may be able to help with the costs of childcare, travel, books, equipment and meals for learners resident in houses where income is below £25000 annually.
