Who is the course for?

This course is suitable for 16 - 18 year old students who have previously completed theTechnical Level 3 Certificate in Health and Social Care (at school or in college) and would like to complete the additional units required to achieve a full Technical Level 3 Extended Diploma in Health and Social Care. All applicants must undertake an interview and apply for DBS clearance to demonstrate that they do not have a criminal background which might prevent them from working with young people or vulnerable adults.

Do I need any formal qualifications?

You will need to have achieved the Technical Level 3 Certificate in Health and Social Care. Learners who wish to progress to University will need to have a GCSE in Maths and English. For Nursing you will also be required to have GCSE Science. You may have the opportunity to complete a GCSE at Northumberland College alongside your BTEC Extended Diploma course.

What will I study on the course?

You will study exciting units including:

- empowerment

- anatomy and Physiology

- research skills

- protection of children, young people and adults

- personal and professional development.

You will produce a portfolio of assignments and work products which will demonstrate that you are able to apply theory to practice. You will also be required to complete practical placement in health and social care environments.

The course runs for 3 days per week over 1 year. In addition to this you will also be required to complete mandatory placement days totalling at least 175 hours (including 75 hours from year 1).

Your progress will be assessed by a range of methods including practical assessments, presentation, observations and written assignments as well as an external assessment and short answer exam. The course will be graded at D to A*.

You may be able to take part in training sessions supporting care within the sector and will undertake additional qualifications such as English and Maths up to GCSE level (dependent upon your prior achievement and initial assessment outcomes).

CACHE Technical Level 3 Extended Diploma in Health and Social Care

After completing the extended diploma course you could enter employment into the Health and Social Care sector in a range of career roles. You could also progress to higher studies in college such as our HNC in Health and Social Care or at university in degree subjects such as nursing, social work, education.

Many of our learners study for free with a Fee Waiver when they are in receipt of qualifying benefits or studying a first full Level 2 or Level 3 qualification and meet age restrictions or are aged between 16-18.

If you are not entitled to a Fee Waiver, you may be entitled to receive Learner Support Funds to help with paying your course fees, or if you are aged over 19 and planning to study at Level 3 or 4 and have not previously studied at Level 3 or above you will be able to apply for an Advanced Learner Loan that covers the costs of your tuition fees. The loan will not cover the cost of any examination / registration fees and these will need to be paid for separately, or you may be entitled to receive Learner Support Funds to help cover the cost.

All learners may also apply for help with the cost of travel to college and the college may be able to help with the costs of childcare, travel, books, equipment and meals.
