Do I need any formal qualifications?

Learners should be 18 years or above and will ideally hold Qualifications at Level 1 or 2 x GCSE at grade D. If not, applicants must be able to demonstrate positive communication skills and effective levels of reading and writing sufficient to meet the requirements of this training (an initial assessment will be undertaken to support your application). All applicants must undertake an interview and apply for DBS clearance to demonstrate that they do not have a criminal background which might prevent them from working with young people or vulnerable adults.

What will I study on the course?

You will study exciting units including:

- Introduction to Duty of Care

- Communication

- Person Centred Approaches

- Equality and Diversity

- Safeguarding, and Personal Development.

There are also a range of other units which you need to study including a wide variety of optional units which can be tailored to your setting and you can choose which fit in best with placement or career aspirations. For example, a learner volunteering within a setting caring for adults with dementia may wish to complete the dementia pathway units offered. Your placement will enhance your knowledge and provide you with the competency based elements of the qualification.

The course runs for 1 day per week or 1 evening per week over 1 year and in addition to this you will be required to undertake a minimum of 1 day per week on placement (at least 250 hours over the academic year).

Your progress will be assessed by a range of methods including practical assessments/observations and written assignments. You will be allocated an assessor who will guide you through your qualification and attend your workplace to observe your practice. You will also be expected to attend sessions at college to maintain contact and to develop your underpinning knowledge of the core areas of Health and Social Care.

You may have the opportunity to complement your studies with other qualifications that will help you gain employment such as English, Maths, Food Safety and First Aid. There is also a chance to do CV workshops and application for jobs workshops as necessary.
