Who is the course for?

This course will develop your practical skills and knowledge for a career as a chef in the catering industry. The programme of study is designed for skilled crafts people working in the hospitality and catering industry, wishing to gain an advanced Qualification to enhance their career prospects

Do I need any formal qualifications?

You must have basic skills in maths and English. You would normally be expected to have an NVQ Level 2 or equivalent. To study this course you must be working in the hospitality industry.

What will I study on the course?

Advanced level of cooking: soups, sauces, meat, poultry, vegetables, rice, pasta, hot and cold desserts

The course runs for 1 Year.

Your practical work in the kitchen will be assessed by observation, giving credit for the skills you already have or you have gained in College. The theory aspects will be tested by an examination at the end of each topic. It may be that a work based assessor will visit you at your place of work to observe and assess you.

You also have the opportunity to complement your studies with other qualifications that will help you gain employment, including functional skills

After completing the course you could progress on to study a Higher National Certificate or Diploma in Hospitality Management or you could work in the Hospitality and Catering industry.

Many of our learners study for free with a Fee Waiver when they are in receipt of qualifying benefits or studying a first full Level 2 or Level 3 qualification and meet age restrictions or are aged between 16-18.

If you are not entitled to a Fee Waiver, you may be entitled to receive Learner Support Funds to help with paying your course fees, or if you are aged over 19 and planning to study at Level 3 or 4 and have not previously studied at Level 3 or above you will be able to apply for an Advanced Learner Loan that covers the costs of your tuition fees. The loan will not cover the cost of any examination / registration fees and these will need to be paid for separately, or you may be entitled to receive Learner Support Funds to help cover the cost.

All learners may also apply for help with the cost of travel to college and the college may be able to help with the costs of childcare, travel, books, equipment and meals.
