Who is the course for?

This course is for students who are interested in barbering or who have at least 2 GCSE's at Grade D or above

Do I need any formal qualifications?

You should have at least 2 GCSE's Grade D or above including English or Maths, or a Level 1 in Hairdressing

- Students must have full uniform including a suitable kit at the start of the Academic year

Wear professional dress for practical sessions

- Have full dexterity and have a good standard of personal hygiene

- To be able to stand for long periods of time (support arrangements can be put in place if required)

- Be able to communicate and work effectively with others

- If English is not your first language, an IELTS score of 5 is required.

Please note that you will be required to wear a uniform and purchase a barbering kit which costs approx. £185. You will also be expected to provide stationery, books and equipment. We may be able to help you with these and also with related costs of coming to college such as travel and childcare.

What will I study on the course?

Course content:

- Working in the hair industry

- Follow health and safety in the salon

- Shampoo, condition and treat the hair and scalp

- Client consultation for hair services

- Cut hair using basic barbering techniques

- Styling men s hair

- Cut facial hair

- Create basic outlines and detailing in hair

- Colour and lighten Hair

- Display stock to promote sales in a salon

- Scalp massage

- Salon reception duties

- Provide threading services for hair removal

Learning Methods:

- practical classes in skills salons

- group based activities

- private study

- demonstrations / industry visits / industry placements

There are on line examinations but you must demonstrate practical competence through practical externally assessed exams and the completion of assignments throughout the year based around live industry based projects

You may also have the opportunity to complement your studies with other qualifications that will help you gain employment, including:

Successful students may progress onto Level 3 Diploma in Barbering

Many of our learners study for free with a Fee Waiver when they are in receipt of qualifying benefits or studying a first full Level 2 or Level 3 qualification and meet age restrictions or are aged between 16-18.

If you are not entitled to a Fee Waiver, you may be entitled to receive Learner Support Funds to help with paying your course fees, or if you are aged over 19 and planning to study at Level 3 or 4 and have not previously studied at Level 3 or above you will be able to apply for an Advanced Learner Loan that covers the costs of your tuition fees. The loan will not cover the cost of any examination / registration fees and these will need to be paid for separately, or you may be entitled to receive Learner Support Funds to help cover the cost.

All learners may also apply for help with the cost of travel to college and the college may be able to help with the costs of childcare, travel, books, equipment and meals.
