Who is the course for?

This course is designed for learners aged 18 years and over who wish to study a vocational qualification on a part-time, flexible basis to work around work and family commitments. It will support you to gain the required qualification to be a level 2 teaching assistant in a school environment, working with children aged 5 - 19 years alongside the National Curriculum, developing the knowledge and skills needed when supporting teaching and learning in primary, secondary or special schools.

Do I need any formal qualifications?

You should have / be working towards GCSEs in maths and English at grade C or above. At a minimum you must be able to demonstrate positive communication skills and effective levels of reading and writing sufficient to meet the requirements of this training at level 2. All applicants must undertake an interview and apply for DBS clearance to demonstrate that they do not have a criminal background which might prevent them from working with young people or vulnerable adults. Learners also need to have a placement for 1-2 days per week within a school setting. You must find this yourself and should bring written confirmation on letter-headed paper to interview.

What will I study on the course?

You will study a range of mandatory core units that support your study including;

- Safeguarding

- Health and Safety

- Equality, Diversity and Inclusion

- Child development

- Supporting positive behaviour and relationships

Additionally there are optional units that are more specialised and will link with your placement to enhance your knowledge and provide you with the competency based elements of the qualification.

The course runs for one half day or evening session per fortnight, usually over one year. As an adult work-based learner you will be expected to attend all sessions and use the information given to further research independently and complete work to progress through your award. You will also be expected to access our VLE (virtual learning environment) to further support your studies.
