Who is the course for?

This Qualification is for learners aged 16 years and over and is particularly appropriate for those with an interest in progressing to a career involved in working with children in early years or wishing to progress to a Higher Education programme in children's care, development and learning. It allows learners to develop the core knowledge, understanding and skills required by the sector, including child development, play and learning, health, observation, assessment and planning. This qualification is mapped to and fully meets the criteria for the Early Years Educator (Level 3) for learners who complete full 2 year programme. Learners will need to attend a practical placement as an important part of the assessment process involves evaluating skills in real working situations.

Do I need any formal qualifications?

Learners should hold GSCEs at grade 4/5 or above including English and maths or appropriate equivalent Level 2 qualifications with the capacity to achieve English and Maths GCSE grade 4/5 during their time on the course. All applicants must undertake an interview and apply for DBS clearance to demonstrate that they do not have a criminal background which might prevent them from working with young people or vulnerable adults

What will I study on the course?

You will study a range of units including:

- Play and Learning

- Child development

- Observation, Assessment and Planning

- Child Health

- Additional Needs

- Providing safe environments for children

- Children s health and wellbeing

These units will link with your placement to enhance your knowledge and provide you with the competency based elements of the qualification. Placements are an essential requirement for achievement of this qualification and you will be assessed in this environment.

The course runs for 3 days per week over 2 years as well as two days of placement per week up to 750 hours over the duration of the course.

Your progress will be assessed through written assignments and a portfolio of placement evidence including practical assessments and observations. Your achievements will be graded from A* - D.

You must also complete a Controlled Assessment which contributes to 30% towards the final grade for the Certificate.

To meet Government requirements for the childcare workforce, it is essential that learners who do not hold both GCSE English and maths at grade 4/5 can study toward 1 of these qualifications during their course.

You will also complete a short course NCFE CACHE Level2 Award in Nutrition and Health.

NCFE CACHE Technical Level 3 Certificate in Childcare and Education (Early Years Educator)

You could progress into a career in the early years or childcare workforce or into a variety of specialist Higher Education (HE) courses in this sector and beyond or to a part time HE option such as the Foundation Degree in Children's Workforce Practice.

Many of our learners study for free with a Fee Waiver when they are in receipt of qualifying benefits or studying a first full Level 2 or Level 3 qualification and meet age restrictions or are aged between 16-18.

If you are not entitled to a Fee Waiver, you may be entitled to receive Learner Support Funds to help with paying your course fees, or if you are aged over 19 and planning to study at Level 3 or 4 and have not previously studied at Level 3 or above you will be able to apply for an Advanced Learner Loan that covers the costs of your tuition fees. The loan will not cover the cost of any examination / registration fees and these will need to be paid for separately, or you may be entitled to receive Learner Support Funds to help cover the cost.

All learners may also apply for help with the cost of travel to college and the college may be able to help with the costs of childcare, travel, books, equipment and meals.
