Who is the course for?

This course is for anyone who would like to take their first steps towards a career in the construction industry specifically areas which involve concreting, block paving and draining etc.

Do I need any formal qualifications?

You don't need any formal qualifications to join this course but should have an interest in construction.

What will I study on the course?

You will study general safety in the workplace, laying construction related materials, such as flag stones, block paving, kerbs and drainage, moving and handling resources, preparing mixed construction related materials and how to cut construction related materials. Ideal if you would like to develop both the skills and knowledge to become a general construction operative.

The course runs over three full days per week, with variety of practical and theory sessions (weather permitting). The main enrolment period for this course is in September but there will also be the opportunity to start the course at other times if places are available.

Progress will be monitored through ongoing assessments in College including theory, paper based tests and practical work.

Functional Skills in Maths and English at level 1/2 if not exempt or if GCSE Grade C has not been achieved and Employability Skills entry Level 3.

If Grade D was achieved at school GCSE will be completed within college.

After successfully completing this course you could move on to do a Diploma in General Construction Level 2

Many of our learners study for free with a Fee Waiver when they are in receipt of qualifying benefits or studying a first full Level 2 or Level 3 qualification and meet age restrictions or are aged between 16-18.

If you are not entitled to a Fee Waiver, you may be entitled to receive Learner Support Funds to help with paying your course fees, or if you are aged over 19 and planning to study at Level 3 or 4 and have not previously studied at Level 3 or above you will be able to apply for an Advanced Learner Loan that covers the costs of your tuition fees. The loan will not cover the cost of any examination / registration fees and these will need to be paid for separately, or you may be entitled to receive Learner Support Funds to help cover the cost.

All learners may also apply for help with the cost of travel to college and the college may be able to help with the costs of childcare, travel, books, equipment and meals.
