Who is the course for?

This course is for anyone who wants to work in the construction industry specifically areas, which involve concreting, drainage and block paving etc. This is ideal if you would like to further develop both the skills and knowledge to become a general construction operative

Do I need any formal qualifications?

You do not need any formal qualifications as an initial assessment will be carried out to establish that this is the course is at the right level for you.

What will I study on the course?

You will learn how to use a variety hand tools and cutting equipment, prepare and place concrete, mix various building materials by hand and machine, lay domestic drainage and set up signage, lighting and guarding when working on site e.g. path or road,. Kerbing, Block Paving and Flag laying form an integral part of the practical activities.

The course is ran over two and a half days per week and includes a variety of practical and theory sessions. The main enrolment period for this course is in September but there will also be the opportunity to start the course at other times if places are available.

This will be done through ongoing assessments in College including theory, online tests and practical work, this will also be assessed on site through an NVQ assessor (apprentices only)

Functional Skills in maths and English at level 1/2 if not exempt or if GCSE Grade C has not been achieved.

If Grade D was achieved at school GCSE will be completed within college you could also study Employability Skills level 1.

Diploma in General Construction Level 2

After completing the course you could find employment or consider setting up your own business in the Building Maintenance, Multi-Trade Repair and Refurbishment Operations.

Many of our learners study for free with a Fee Waiver when they are in receipt of qualifying benefits or studying a first full Level 2 or Level 3 qualification and meet age restrictions or are aged between 16-18.

If you are not entitled to a Fee Waiver, you may be entitled to receive Learner Support Funds to help with paying your course fees, or if you are aged over 19 and planning to study at Level 3 or 4 and have not previously studied at Level 3 or above you will be able to apply for an Advanced Learner Loan that covers the costs of your tuition fees. The loan will not cover the cost of any examination / registration fees and these will need to be paid for separately, or you may be entitled to receive Learner Support Funds to help cover the cost.

All learners may also apply for help with the cost of travel to college and the college may be able to help with the costs of childcare, travel, books, equipment and meals.
