Who is the course for?

The course is for anyone who has an interest in the construction industry who would like to develop their skills and knowledge to become a bricklayer qualified to a level 2 diploma standard. You ll benefit from our strong employer links, which open the door to work experience opportunities, industry visits and professional mentoring. Our courses combine hands-on training, the highest industry standards and employability skills to give you a real head start in your career.

We provide superb purpose-built facilities with generous space for practical construction. Our expert staff have vast experience as well as great contacts across the industry.

Do I need any formal qualifications?

You should have two GCSEs at grade D in English and maths or a relevant Level 1 qualification and have an interest in bricklaying. Following a successful interview and initial assessment results, you will be allocated a place to study the practical and theoretical elements of bricklaying. Parents and carers are welcome to attend the interview but not the initial assessment

What will I study on the course?

You will learn thin joint masonry cladding, solid walling, cavity walling and both isolated and attached piers. Units will also cover safe working practices, contributing to setting out and several other bricklaying skills. Ideal if you would like to further develop your bricklaying skills and knowledge.

You will attend college two and a half days per week for one year. The main enrolment period for this course is in September but there will also be the opportunity to start the course at other times if places are available.

Your progress will be assessed through practical and knowledge assignments throughout the course as your skills and knowledge develops. Your Maths and English skills will be assessed through a controlled assessment or final exam.

You may also study Functional Skills; you will be tested at the start of your course to identify your needs. Other options will be available including Employability Skills Level 1.

At the end of the course you will receive a Diploma in Bricklaying Level 2 and a Certificate in Employability level 1, you may also gain Functional Skills at the relevant level.

After successfully completing the course you could progress onto a Level 3 Diploma in Brickwork which will enhance your skills and knowledge to advanced craft level and equip you with supervisory and management skills. If you continue your studies, you will develop your literacy and numeracy skills further.

There is the potential to develop your skills further on an apprenticeship or to go into employment in various trowel occupations in the construction industry.

Many of our learners study for free with a Fee Waiver when they are in receipt of qualifying benefits or studying a first full Level 2 or Level 3 qualification and meet age restrictions or are aged between 16-18.

If you are not entitled to a Fee Waiver, you may be entitled to receive Learner Support Funds to help with paying your course fees, or if you are aged over 19 and planning to study at Level 3 or 4 and have not previously studied at Level 3 or above you will be able to apply for an Advanced Learner Loan that covers the costs of your tuition fees. The loan will not cover the cost of any examination / registration fees and these will need to be paid for separately, or you may be entitled to receive Learner Support Funds to help cover the cost.

All learners may also apply for help with the cost of travel to college and the college may be able to help with the costs of childcare, travel, books, equipment and meals.
