Who is the course for?

This course is for anyone who would like to gain practical Skills and knowledge of Painting and decorating at Level 1.

Do I need any formal qualifications?

No formal qualifications are needed to join this course but should have an interest in painting and decorating.

What will I study on the course?

You will learn safe working practices, building methods and construction technology, how to erect and dismantle access and working platforms, preparation of surfaces, application of paint systems by brush and roller and how to apply papers to walls, specialist decorative finishes. Ideal if you would like to develop both the skills and knowledge to become a painter and decorator.

You will also study Health and safety Level 2 and Employability Skills Entry Level 3 or Level 1. Functional skills Maths and English will also form part of the course; this can be determined by previous qualifications and also an Initial assessment that will be carried out at the start of the course.

You will attend college for two and a half days per week for one year. The main enrolment period for this course is in September but there will also be the opportunity to start the course at other times if places are available.

By practical assessments in the workshop, five multiple choice question papers, a practical skills test covering various practical activities and two Diploma online tests,

Whilst on this course you can gain Employability Skills at either entry level 3 or level 1, you can also study Functional Skills in maths and English at level 1 or level 2, depending on previous Qualifications.

City and Guilds Diploma in painting and decorating Level 1.

After successfully completing the course you could progress on to the Level 2 Diploma in painting and decorating or NVQ Level 2 if you have gained employment.

Many of our learners study for free with a Fee Waiver when they are in receipt of qualifying benefits or studying a first full Level 2 or Level 3 qualification and meet age restrictions or are aged between 16-18.

If you are not entitled to a Fee Waiver, you may be entitled to receive Learner Support Funds to help with paying your course fees, or if you are aged over 19 and planning to study at Level 3 or 4 and have not previously studied at Level 3 or above you will be able to apply for an Advanced Learner Loan that covers the costs of your tuition fees. The loan will not cover the cost of any examination / registration fees and these will need to be paid for separately, or you may be entitled to receive Learner Support Funds to help cover the cost.

All learners may also apply for help with the cost of travel to college and the college may be able to help with the costs of childcare, travel, books, equipment and meals.
