Who is the course for?

This course enables you to develop awareness of live performance in the media industries and learn the technical skills required to work as a specialist make-up artist.

To aid you with character development you will learn how to convey your ideas through visual communication which will include life drawing, sculpting and photography. You will develop a professional portfolio which will provide assessment evidence and will be of high value when seeking employment.

Do I need any formal qualifications?

Students will have normally completed one of the following:

* Foundation Diploma in Art and Design.

* BTEC Diploma in Art and Design Level 3.

* Access to HE in Art and Design or Media.

* 2 A Levels at grade C or above or equivalent.

We are happy to consider those who possess a high level of experience in art and design but may not possess formal qualifications. Those returning to education with life skills and experience in the workplace would also be considered.

What will I study on the course?

This course focuses on working in theatre, film, television and the fashion and photographic industry. You will study current trends in make-up, body painting and special effects.

You will learn about:

Advanced prosthetics, using a variety of media and mould making

Digital media for make-up industries

Postiche including wig making and hair additions

Fashion/editorial hair and make-up techniques covering a variety of genres and periods of history

Specialist make up including body painting, bald caps and casualty techniques

You will consider your own and others work in terms of historical and contextual understanding and through professional practice explore employment options such as Freelance Practitioner and develop your business skills.

After successful completion of the course you could progress onto a BA Honours programme.

Higher Education learners are entitled to apply for HE Loans that cover the cost of tuition. In addition, depending on your chosen course of study and individual circumstances, you may be entitled to a maintenance loan. You may also qualify for a college bursary All learners can also apply for help with the cost of travel to college and the college may be able to help with the costs of childcare, travel, books, equipment and meals for learners resident in houses where income is below £25000 annually.
