Who is the course for?

This course is designed for post A-Level students preparing them not only to progress to top Universities but to do so with an informed confidence. It will also act as a platform for anyone wishing to pursue a career within the creative sector as a professional artist or designer.

Do I need any formal qualifications?

You will normally have at least four GCSEs at grade C or above, along with a Level 3 qualification such as an A Level or BTEC qualification. Those aged 19+ who do not hold the required qualifications will be considered based on previous experience. A portfolio of work that demonstrates your current abilities will be required for interview and you will also need to be or become 18 years of age in the year of study.

What will I study on the course?

The aim of the Foundation Diploma in Art and Design is to create an exciting and meaningful experience through immersion in a range of activities which nurture students existing abilities, introduce them to new skills, techniques, and ways of seeing the world. Students will develop high levels of critical thinking and creative interpretation.

Through our work with Breeze Creatives we are able to offer students a unique opportunity to gain real insight and experience within the Creative sector while studying on the Foundation Diploma in Art and Design. Partnership working with local Universities, Museums and Galleries will also ensure that learners are at the forefront of what is happening within the Art and Design sector giving them a distinct advantage with UCAS and University applications.

Initially, students explore the main approaches and processes intrinsic to art, design and communication (including fine art, fashion, textiles, graphics, photography, video and 3D among many others) alongside a programme of drawing and investigation of contemporary art and design. This is followed by a concentrated period of focused work within the students own choice of specialism during which students are thoroughly supported and guided through their UCAS applications by dedicated, specialist tutors.

This is a one year course studied full time. As well as studio work there are a range of gallery visits both local and national. There will be a range of live projects and workshops that will allow to develop skills working with practicing professionals and universities. On this course there is a high level of contact with lecturers who are all experienced professionals in their field. You will be given practical help in portfolio presentation and interview preparation with expert advice that will enable you to make an informed decision about your future academic or career opportunities. You will be carefully guided and assisted through the UCAS process. We have an outstanding record in delivering this course and helping students progress. 100% of learners on the course over the previous five years have all secured their Higher Education place the vast majority at their first choice institution.

Your progress will be assessed by experienced lecturers. This course provides an intensive learning experience in a creative, user-friendly environment. Through the study of a wide range of art and design disciplines, you will have the opportunity to explore your practical skills and develop your creative capacity enabled though the embedding of a clear analytical approach to reviewing your personal progress. Drawing and recording in the broadest sense underpins all these activities, and the study of the history of art provides you with a theoretical base.

You will at the end of the course produce a Final Major project which will be inspired, initiated and developed by the student. This project will also determine the final grade you receive for the course, Pass, Merit or Distinction.

Many of our learners study for free with a Fee Waiver when they are in receipt of qualifying benefits or studying a first full Level 2 or Level 3 qualification and meet age restrictions or are aged between 16-18.

If you are not entitled to a Fee Waiver, you may be entitled to receive Learner Support Funds to help with paying your course fees, or if you are aged over 19 and planning to study at Level 3 or 4 and have not previously studied at Level 3 or above you will be able to apply for an Advanced Learner Loan that covers the costs of your tuition fees. The loan will not cover the cost of any examination / registration fees and these will need to be paid for separately, or you may be entitled to receive Learner Support Funds to help cover the cost.

All learners may also apply for help with the cost of travel to college and the college may be able to help with the costs of childcare, travel, books, equipment and meals.
