Who is the course for?

HND in Health and Social care is a healthcare professional qualification intended for those who wish to develop their knowledge, skills and understanding across the health and social care sector. It will equip you for employment at deputy manager level by developing the skills, techniques, personal qualities and attitudes essential for working at this level. In addition, it will prepare you to progress to further development at a higher level if desired for example courses such as nursing, midwifery or working with older adults.

This programme is highly work related and practical, so an element of work placement required.

Do I need any formal qualifications?

You need a Level 4 qualification e.g. an HNC or other Level 4 equivalent in health and social care or a related subject including work experience within a health and social care environment. Students must be able to read and communicate clearly and accurately enough to meet the requirements of this training. All candidates must undertake an interview, initial assessment and apply for or demonstrate DBS clearance to confirm that they do not have a criminal background which might prevent them from working with young people or vulnerable adults.

Students are advised they may incur extra costs for additional books, journal subscriptions and resources. If the printing allocation is exceeded then you may need to purchase additional credits. Students are responsible for transport costs and this includes field trips.

Each unit or module will be assessed by a mixture of assignments, seminars, presentations and/or evidence from your work placement. There are no examinations. You will be supported through tutor notes and materials which are available on Blackboard, our virtual learning environment. You will be required to complete research and work independently beyond class and keep up to date, communicating regularly with your tutors if you cannot attend college.

You may also have the opportunity to complement your studies with other Qualifications that will help you gain employment or progress such as counselling, English or maths.

This course can provide direct progression into other Higher Education courses or into Management/ Supervisory careers in Health and Social Care.

NB: It is your responsibility to check with the Higher Education Institution to find out if they accept this qualification.

Higher Education learners are entitled to apply for HE Loans that cover the cost of tuition. In addition, depending on your chosen course of study and individual circumstances, you may be entitled to a maintenance loan. You may also qualify for a college bursary All learners can also apply for help with the cost of travel to college and the college may be able to help with the costs of childcare, travel, books, equipment and meals for learners resident in houses where income is below £25000 annually.
