Michael Errington, Level 3 Outdoor Programmes Apprenticeship

Michael Errington, Level 3 Outdoor Programmes Apprenticeship

Outdoor Programmes student, Michael Errington, is using the skills he learns on his NVQ level 3 course to work as an apprentice at Kirkley Hall’s Outdoor Activity Centre.

Michael decided to enrol on the outdoor education course when he finished school as participating in adventurous outdoor activities is something he has had a passion for from a very young age.

Michael is developing his skills and knowledge in a wide range of outdoor pursuits including rock climbing, mountaineering, hill walking, high ropes and archery alongside his favourite activity, kayaking.

"My main hobby was, and still is, kayaking and I regularly compete nationally in canoe slalom, which involves travelling around the country and competing in a range of events. I currently hold a good ranking and hope to progress even further in the current season, with an eye on competing for the British team," he says.

"My Apprenticeship at the Kirkley Hall Activity Centre has been a great opportunity and I am earning at the same time that I am learning on the job. The experience I get from this, and from working alongside experienced college staff, is ideal for me in my chosen career. Once I finish my apprenticeship I would love to gain a contract within the activity centre."
