Northumberland College is opening its doors to the community and hosting a family open day and careers event later this month.

The free event will take place 10am - 3pm on Saturday 26 April at the Ashington Campus, on College Road.

The event will have something for everyone with fairground rides, face painting, Bollywood and belly dancing workshops and animal handling sessions with animals from the college's Kirkley Hall Zoological Gardens attraction.

Visitors will be able to pick up a perfect gift from local crafters and enjoy a range of refreshments from light bites and snacks to ice cream and doughnuts.

Stuart Cutforth, Principal of Northumberland College said: "We are looking forward to our community open day, there will be plenty for all the family to see and do.

"We wanted to engage with the local community and provide a fun family day out with an exciting atmosphere. We hope to see lots of faces on campus that day."

In addition to the attractions, people can talk to tutors and advisors about the range of courses and support available at all college campuses and try their hand at practical courses with exciting have-a-go workshops.

Have-a-go workshops include a pop up photo studio, hand massages, floristry demos, fitness checks, baking master classes and many more.

Courses are available for all ages whether they are interested in learning something new, looking for a career change or a new hobby, or wondering what to do when they leave school.

Visitors to the events can find out about courses available to start now and also for September 2014.

Those that decide to apply to start in September 2014 will be amongst the first to study in brand-new facilities, thanks to the £9.5million campus upgrade.

The new facilities include a brand-new restaurant, hair and beauty salon and engineering and construction workshops at Ashington and an agriculture workshop and learning block at Kirkley Hall.

A separate careers events will be taking place at the Kirkley Hall Campus 10am - 1pm on the same day, Saturday 26 April, for people interested in working with animals or land-based courses such as agriculture.
