Construction

With major development and investment in the North East there is a great opportunity to build yourself a career in construction. With a dedicated team of industry professionals our construction department offers a wide range of courses, some of which are unique to our College.

We have an enviable nationwide reputation for quality training, superior resources and commitment to addressing industry needs and can proudly boast being one of only six UniBond Centres of Excellence in the country. Our close links with employers ensure our training reflects the latest industry standards in:
• Basic construction skills
• Bricklaying
• Carpentry and joinery
• Dry lining
• Floor covering
• Highways maintenance and civil engineering
• Painting and decorating
• Plastering
• Technical and professional
• Wall and floor tiling.

Real training environments mean our students have the opportunity to complete some of their training building real houses, using heritage, traditional and cutting-edge modern materials.

The sustainable construction agenda is a key issue for the future and we are taking a lead role, working with employers, manufacturers and colleagues to deliver skills and knowledge in this field.

At Ashington our main construction department has well-equipped workshops where you can develop valuable practical skills in your chosen craft. We offer evening classes for beginners in bricklaying, carpentry and joinery, plastering and wall and floor tiling.

Our construction training centre in Berwick is staffed by a team of experienced local tradesmen. We welcome students from over the border in Scotland, thanks to a unique arrangement with Scottish funding bodies.

Courses are also available in Prudhoe as part of the Tynedale Virtual College.

We also offer Apprenticeships and Advanced Apprenticeships in a range of Construction trades. Contact advice.centre@northland.ac.uk or 01670 841200 for more details.

Career opportunities...
The construction industry offers a wide range of jobs and careers for skilled workers, and many of our students go on to set up their own businesses.
