Construction is the UK’s biggest industry, with two million people working in more than 700 different types of jobs.* With major development and investment in the North East, now is a great time to pursue your career in construction.
Whether you’re starting out in the industry or want to develop your skills, our construction department offers a comprehensive range of daytime, evening, onsite assessment (OSAT) and specialised short courses to help you in your career. Some of our courses are unique to Northumberland College.
The department enjoys an enviable nationwide reputation for quality training, superior resources and commitment to addressing industry needs. Our close links with employers ensure our training reflects the latest industry standards.
We can proudly boast being one of only six UniBond Centres of Excellence in the country. The sustainable construction agenda is a key issue for the future and we are taking a lead role, working with employers, manufacturers and colleagues to deliver skills and knowledge in this field.
We offer a wide range of full and part time courses in all construction disciplines, including:
• Air conditioning and refrigeration
• Basic construction skills
• Bricklaying
• Carpentry and joinery
• Civil engineering
• Floor covering
• Highways maintenance
• Interior systems
• Painting and decorating
• Plastering
• Plumbing
• Technician studies
• Wall and floor tiling.
Our real training environments mean our students have the opportunity to complete some of their training building real houses, using heritage, traditional and cutting edge modern materials.
At Ashington our main construction department has well equipped workshops where you can develop valuable practical skills in your chosen craft. Our construction training centre in Berwick offers training for people in North Northumberland and is also able to provide training to learners from across the border in Scotland. We also provide a range of practical construction training in Prudhoe as part of the Tynedale Virtual College and are developing a range of courses at a new centre in Alnwick.
Here’s what Ofsted said about the department in the 2009 inspection:
“Learners develop good vocational skills and demonstrate a high level of attainment. They carry out realistic and complex practical work in the college that mirrors industrial practice.”
“Teaching and learning are good.”
